Phlex Carbon Fiber offers precision-cut, short-length chopped carbon fiber in two fiber grades: PhlexCarbon Chopped HSC and PhlexCarbon Chopped IMC

Both products are produced in Lake City, South Carolina, and are available in multiple fiber lengths with custom lengths available upon request. Seeded forms are also available to provide increased bulk density and improved flow and are ideally suited for automatic feeding and metering.

Phlex Carbon Chopped HSC

Phlex Carbon Chopped HSC is a high-strength, standard-modulus chopped carbon fiber manufactured from high-quality carbon fiber.

The material has a 7-micron filament diameter, tensile strength of 640 ksi (4,413 MPa), tensile modulus of 33.5 Msi (231 GPa)  and elongation at break of 1.7%.

PhlexCarbon Chopped HSC is precision cut for consistency and can be supplied in various fiber lengths

Phlex Carbon Chopped IMC

PhlexCarbon Chopped IMC is an intermediate-modulus chopped carbon fiber manufactured using aerospace-grade carbon fiber.

The material has a 5-micron filament diameter, tensile strength of 795 ksi (5,480 MPa), tensile modulus of 40 Msi (276 GPa)  and elongation at break of 1.9%.

PhlexCarbon Chopped IMC consists of precision-cut, short-length carbon fibers repurposed from a variety of manufacturing processes, preventing the landfill disposal of these materials.

Understanding the Difference Between HSC and IMC

PhlexCarbon Chopped HSC is a high-strength, standard-modulus carbon fiber with a 7-micron filament diameter. PhlexCarbon Chopped IMC is an intermediate-modulus carbon fiber manufactured using aerospace-grade carbon fiber with a 
5-micron filament diameter.

Their tensile properties also differ. PhlexCarbon Chopped HSC has a tensile strength of 640 ksi (4,413 MPa) and tensile modulus of 33.5 Msi (231 GPa), while PhlexCarbon Chopped IMC has a tensile strength of 795 ksi (5,480 MPa) and tensile modulus of 40 Msi (276 GPa).

Both products have a carbon density of 1.78 g/cm³, bulk density of 300–500 g/l, moisture content below 0.3%, and sizing content of 1.5% to 3.5%.

Both PhlexCarbon Chopped HSC and PhlexCarbon Chopped IMC are available in 1/4-inch and 1/2-inch fiber lengths, with custom fiber lengths available upon reques

Both products can also be supplied in a “seeded” form, which provides increased bulk density and improved flow. Seeded forms are ideally suited for automatic feeding and metering.

PhlexCarbon Chopped HSC and PhlexCarbon Chopped IMC are packaged in 40 lb. boxes.

Frequently asked questions

HSC is High Strength Carbon fiber with a typical tensile strength of ~640 ksi. IMC is Intermediate Modulus Carbon fiber and has a slightly higher tensile strength of ~795 ksi. Phlex Carbon can provide both chopped HSC and IMC grades.
